General Information


Application to the undergraduate programs in Fine Arts, Communication Design, Media Art & Design, Product Design, as well as teaching degree programmes in Art Education, is only possible for the winter semester and depends on passing an artistic aptitude test. 
The artistic aptitude test consists of a preselection followed by an oral/practical examination.

Preselection

During the preselection applicants' artistic and creative work samples (portfolio) are evaluated. A successful preselection leads to participation in further examinations.

Oral/practical examination

  • Fine Arts and Art Education:
    The oral/practical examination takes the form of an interview focusing on questions related to artistic/creative related questions. It focuses in particular on fundamental concepts and contexts as well as technical issues in painting, graphic design, media and plastic as well as spatial representation, with particular emphasis on the respective fields of study.
  • Design programs (Communication Design, Media Art and Design, Product Design):
    The oral/practical examination consists of an artistic/practical component involving discipline-specific tasks and an on-site examination interview.

Admission to the artistic aptitude test requires a complete application. Applications for the winter semester (starting on October 1st) must be submitted via the SIM application portal at HBKsaar by the preceding May 31st (deadline).

Applicants will received a notification of the result of the portfolio preselection. If the preselection was successful applicatants will receive an admission letter and must herafter apply for enrollment through the SIM application portal.

Application documents

  • Curriculum vitae with photo 
  • University entrance qualification or last half-year report certificate
  • If applicable, proof of successful completion of a course of study-related training or a professional internship
  • If applicable, proof of previous periods of study as well as academic and/or examination achievements
  • Scan of identity card
  • Artistic and creative work samples (portfolio) 

The application and selection process is practically the same for international applicants as it for German applicants. There are however some additional documents to be submitted :

  • Preliminary review documentation via uni-assist (VPD)
    International applicants with foreign educational credentials must first apply online via the service agency for international students uni-ASSIST in order to receive the necessary VPD (Preliminary Review Documentation). In order to meet the university application deadlines, you should apply for your VPD at least 6 weeks before this deadline.
    After you have received your VPD documentation from uni-Assist, you need to apply directly at htw saar and submit the VPD from uni-assist, together with your application documents before the application deadline.
  • Proof of adequate German proficiency in German:
    Goethe Institut Certificate B2
    DSH 2 or 3 (German language proficiency test)
    Telc B2
    Deutsches Sprachdiplom der KMK (DSD 2)
  • Applicants from China are requested to have their academic transcripts verified by the academic examinations office at the cultural affairs department at the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Peking (APS) /www.aps.org.cn

Subject to further requirements, admission to studies in the degree programmes Fine Art, Communication Design, Product Design and Media Art & Design is open to students who have the entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife) or who are students in the class/grade that leads to the entrance qualification for studies at universities of applied sciences (Fachhochschulreife); in cases of admission due to special artistic talent, admission is open to students who have completed their school education or have a school-leaving certificate taken after the fifth year of secondary school.

Admission to the preselection in the study programme Art Education is granted to those who possess proof of the general higher education entrance qualification or a qualification recognised as equivalent or who are pupils in a class/grade in which this qualification can be acquired. 

As a rule, only applicants who have reached or will reach the minimum age of 18 in the same year can be admitted.

Internship


In the degree programmes Communication Design, Media Art & Design and Product Design, a course-related internship of 12 weeks must be completed. It can be carried out, for example, in the areas of advertising, print media, graphics, photography, publishing, TV broadcasting, industrial design, product design, software design, construction, exhibition design, architecture, interior design or in related areas.

In exceptional cases, the Central Examination Board may determine that the internship can be completed by the end of the 4th semester.

Completed apprenticeship related to the degree programme can be credited.

Artistic-creative work samples Communication Design

Please upload a portfolio of approximately 20 work samples via the SIM application portal as PDF document, with a maximum size of 100 MB. For larger files, please provide an external link, such as YouTube, Vimeo, or cloud storage. The portfolio can include various types of design work: drawings, sketches, photographs, animations, layouts, collages, etc.

The oral and practical examination will take place in person in Saarbrücken. For this, the portfolio must be brought in its original form (no digital presentation).

Artistic-creative work samples Media Art & Design

Please upload work samples (portfolio) via the SIM application portal, practical work samples in the form of a PDF document. Depending on the file size, 3 to 20 work samples can be combined into one document. The total size must not exceed 100 MB. For larger files such as videos, we recommend using external links, for example on platforms like YouTube, Vimeo, or cloud storage services.

The portfolio should primarily include time-based media works such as films, animations, games, moving images in any form, projections, and light art. However, photos, storyboards, scripts, and similar contents are also welcome.

Artistic-creative work samples product design

Please upload a portfolio of approximately 20 work samples via the SIM application portal as a single PDF document, with a maximum file size of 100 MB. For larger files, please provide an external link, such as YouTube, Vimeo, or cloud storage.

The portfolio may include various types of design exercises: drawings, sketches, photographs, models, collages, prototypes, etc.

Artistic-creative work samples Fine Arts

In addition to the online application, the portfolio with the work samples must be sent exclusively by post. The surname, first name and application ID must be noted on the portfolio. The portfolio must be submitted to the HBKsaar by 31 May.

A portfolio* with 20 originals and a written assurance (included inthe portfolio) that the submitted works were produced by the applicant him/herself must be submitted. Two-dimensional works, e.g. paintings, prints, drawings, photographs, must be submitted in a format up to DIN A1. Three-dimensional works, e.g. sculptures, reliefs and models must be submitted as photographs in a minimum size of 24 × 30 cm.

Digital media art works, e.g. video, audio are to be submitted on USB stick or memory card.

Photography may also be submitted as a printout. The submitted works must be labelled on the back with the name, first name and year of creation.

* The HBKsaar accepts no liability for the submitted works. It will keep the works ready for collection by the applicant or a person authorised in writing for three months after completion of the qualifying examination. After expiry of this period, the work will be destroyed. Submitted work will not be returned by the HBKsaar.

Artistic and creative work samples for teaching degree program in art education

Teaching degree programs LS1 and LS1+LS2 and LAB
In addition to the online application through the SIM portal, a portfolio with work samples must be sent exclusively by mail. The portfolio should include the last name, first name, and application ID. The portfolio must be received at HBKsaar by May 31st (deadline).

Submission requirements include a portfolio* with 20 originals and a written declaration (affixed to the portfolio) stating that the submitted works were created by the applicant. Two-dimensional works, such as painting, printmaking, drawing, and photography, should be submitted in a format up to DIN A1. Three-dimensional works, such as sculptures, reliefs, and models, should be submitted as photographs with a minimum size of 24 × 30 cm. Digital media art works, such as video and audio, should be submitted on a USB stick or memory card. Photography can also be submitted as a print. The submitted works should be labelled on the back with the name, first name, and year of creation.

HBKsaar assumes no liability for the submitted works. The works will be kept for three months after the completion of the aptitude test for pickup by the applicant or an authorized representative. After this period, the works will be destroyed, and submitted works will not be returned by HBKsaar.

Teaching degree program Primary Education (LP)
In addition to the online application through the SIM portal, a portfolio with work samples must be sent exclusively by mail. The portfolio should include the last name, first name, and application ID. The portfolio must be received at HBKsaar by May 31st (deadline).  Submission requirements include a portfolio* with 10 originals and a written declaration (affixed to the portfolio) stating that the submitted works were created by the applicant. Two-dimensional works, such as painting, printmaking, drawing, and photography, should be submitted in a format up to DIN A1. Three-dimensional works, such as sculptures, reliefs, and models, should be submitted as photographs with a minimum size of 24 × 30 cm. Digital media art works, such as video and audio, should be submitted on a USB stick or memory card. Photography can also be submitted as a print. The submitted works should be labelled on the back with the name, first name, and year of creation. Additionally, three images (photo, print, etc.) of artworks (painting, sculpture, graphics, photography, media art) of your choice should be included for the aptitude test interview.

HBKsaar assumes no liability for the submitted works. The works will be kept for three months after the completion of the aptitude test for pickup by the applicant or an authorized representative.
